Vaginal Rejuvenation (ThermiVa®) in Fredericksburg, VA
Vaginal rejuvenation helps with issues that stem from the aging process, as well as hormonal changes and pregnancy. At Surgical Arts of Virginia, we offer ThermiVa® vaginal rejuvenation for women living in Washington DC, Fredericksburg, Stafford, Richmond, Charlottesville, and the surrounding areas of Virginia.
What is Vaginal Rejuvenation?
Today, there are a variety of gynecological treatments available for women seeking more comfort and confidence, including hormonal and non-hormonal medications as well as surgical and nonsurgical medical procedures.
Our bodies experience countless changes as we age. Some of these changes are readily apparent, while others — including changes affecting our most intimate areas — are felt but not seen. For women, the invisible effects of aging may include vaginal laxity (loss of tightness), lack of lubrication and urinary incontinence. Menopause and childbirth exacerbate these issues further.
Vaginal rejuvenation procedures help women of all ages improve the appearance and function of their vaginal and vulvar tissues. Surgical options for vaginal rejuvenation include labiaplasty, vaginoplasty, monsplasty and clitoral hood reduction. Nonsurgical vaginal rejuvenation procedures are energy-based treatments, which stimulate collagen production in the vaginal canal or exterior tissues.
Dr. Palmer offers vaginal rejuvenation with ThermiVa®, a comfortable and short treatment that is performed in our office. This may help with feminine issues that a woman experiences at various stages of life, such as pregnancy, menopause and the natural aging process.

How Does ThermiVa® Work?
ThermiVa® is a radiofrequency treatment that uses electromagnetic waves to heat the tissues of the vaginal canal or labia. The radiofrequency energy is delivered via a thin handheld wand that is gently placed against the internal and/or external tissues. When the outer layers of tissue are heated, the body responds by increasing blood supply and creating extra collagen and elastin in the deeper tissue layers.
The methodology behind this treatment is exactly the same as radiofrequency treatments for facial rejuvenation. Collagen and elastin are proteins that help our skin stay firm and elastic. Our bodies produce less of these proteins as we get older, meaning our skin loses the internal supportive structure that keeps it looking and feeling youthful. Triggering the production of new collagen and elastin fibers reverses the effects of aging by tightening and strengthening the treated tissues.
Radiofrequency energy has been used safely for many years in both medical and aesthetic treatments.

Is Vaginal Rejuvenation Right for Me?
You may be a good candidate for our ThermiVa® vaginal rejuvenation treatments if you are bothered by loss of tissue elasticity and/or feminine health issues. Our patients have often experienced childbirth, weight fluctuations, menopause or medical conditions, but these are not prerequisites for treatment. Most women are candidates for this procedure, whether they are seeking to improve aesthetics, functionality or both. ThermiVa® can help women of all ages and stages of life.
Pregnant women and new mothers should wait until at least six weeks after vaginal childbirth to schedule a ThermiVa® treatment. This gives the tissues time to heal. Other contraindications to this treatment include an active sexually transmitted infection, yeast infection or urinary tract infection. ThermiVa® is not appropriate for individuals with significant pelvic organ prolapse or an implanted medical device.
We encourage you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Palmer to learn more about the treatment and what it may do for you.
Can I Combine My ThermiVa® Treatments With Any Other Procedures?
ThermiVa® can be a wonderful choice for our patients planning a mommy makeover. A mommy makeover corrects changes in the areas most affected by carrying, birthing and nursing a child. In most cases, this means surgical repair or enhancement of the breasts (augmentation, reduction, lift) and abdomen (tummy tuck, liposuction) performed concurrently.
Including ThermiVa® in a mommy makeover package allows the procedure to address other common postpartum concerns, especially vaginal laxity and stress urinary incontinence.
Do I Need to Prepare Before a ThermiVa® Vaginal Rejuvenation Treatment?
Minimal preparations are required before your vaginal rejuvenation appointment. You can continue most normal activities up until treatment and resume most immediately afterward. If you wax or are currently getting laser hair removal, we recommend doing it at least a week before the ThermiVa® treatment. You may be asked to shave or closely clip the external treatment area one to two days before the procedure.
If you have your period or an active outbreak of an infection, you should wait until it has subsided to be treated. Let your provider know if you are prone to herpes outbreaks as they may prescribe an antiviral medication prior to the ThermiVa® treatment.
On the day of your appointment, ensure the treatment area is clean, dry and free of any lotions or other products. Remove any jewelry. We recommended emptying your bladder immediately before the treatment so you are comfortable.
How is ThermiVa® Performed?
The ThermiVa® system is designed with a thin wand (about 0.5” wide) that fits into the vaginal canal with ease. Lubrication is used to ensure comfort.
Once it is inserted, Dr. Palmer administers radiofrequency energy in a circular motion to heat the tissues gently and evenly. The thermal heat stimulates collagen production to thicken and tighten vaginal tissues. The wand can also be used on the outside of the vulva to improve the appearance of the labia minora.
Our Fredericksburg ThermiVa® procedure takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes in our office. The session includes 15 to 20 minutes for tightening internal tissues and 15 to 20 minutes for external tissue remodeling.
What Does ThermiVa® Feel Like?
There is typically little irritation during the ThermiVa® treatment. You may feel a warm sensation during the energy delivery, but there is no pain involved. It might even feel like a relaxing internal massage. You are welcome to bring a book, listen to music or catch up on your favorite show while you have your procedure. No anesthetics are required.
What is Vaginal Rejuvenation Recovery Like?
No downtime is needed after your vaginal rejuvenation with ThermiVa®. You will be able to resume most of your usual activities right away. We recommend waiting several days to have sex after the treatment, as the area may initially be sensitive. If you are experiencing discomfort during sex past a week post-procedure, please contact our office.
When Will I See Results From ThermiVa®?
Many women notice an immediate improvement after the treatment. While you may not see or feel a change right away, most patients notice a difference after the second week. Full results from each session can take several weeks, and final results are expected about three months after the last session.
The reason for these delayed benefits is the collagen-building process. New collagen does not appear right away. Your body needs time to engage and complete this natural process. Results continue to improve as new collagen is produced.
How Many ThermiVa® Vaginal Rejuvenation Treatments Will I Need?
Multiple sessions typically produce the best results. Our recommended treatment package includes three sessions, typically spaced about four weeks apart. This timeline maximizes the benefits of increased collagen and elastin between sessions.
How Long Does ThermiVa® Last?
The longevity of ThermiVa® results varies and depends on how quickly your body naturally breaks down collagen. Most patients remain satisfied with their results for up to a year after completing an initial three-treatment regimen. We recommend coming back for an annual touch-up to ensure your results are long-lasting and your symptoms do not recur, without the need for surgical intervention.
