Facial Fat Transfer in Fredericksburg, VA
Facial contouring is a way to look younger and enhance your natural features. Dr. R. Shane Palmer uses various techniques for the procedure, such as facial fat transfer. This is a popular option for men and women in Washington DC, Fredericksburg, Stafford, Richmond, Charlottesville, and the surrounding areas of Virginia who may not want dermal fillers.
What is a Fat Grafting for Facial Contouring?
Fat transfers to the face is one of Dr. Palmer’s favorite procedures to perform because of the amazing transformation that can be accomplished. The face typically loses volume as we age. This can result in a gaunt, aged look, while the youthful, oval appearance is replaced by a square face with flattened cheeks. A visible transition between the lower eyelid and the cheek as well as the development of smile lines (nasolabial folds) is another symptom. Fat grafting replaces this volume loss with your own fat. The result is fuller cheeks, a smooth transition at the lid/cheek junction, and a lifting effect that attenuates the smile lines. If hollowing of the cheeks is present, this also can be addressed.
In addition to the volume replacement, the overlying skin of the face is rejuvenated by the cells naturally present in the transferred fat.

Is a Facial Fat Transfer Right for Me?
The efficacy of facial fat contouring is based on several individual factors that Dr. Palmer evaluates during the consultation. In general, this technique is recommended for patients who do not want or needed dermal fillers or facial surgery.
How is Facial Fat Grafting Performed?
To perform fat grafting to the face, Dr. Palmer will first select a location to harvest the fat, typically from the lower abdomen. He uses IV sedation and local anesthetic for comfort before harvesting the fat. The fat is prepared by centrifuging, then mixed with platelet-rich plasma before being injected into the face in precise locations with a tiny cannula. The body will grow new blood vessels into the fat so that it becomes incorporated into the face.
This is a long-term solution to restore volume. Other procedures such as laser skin resurfacing can be performed simultaneously to enhance the outcome.
What is Fat Transfer to the Face Recovery Like?
The fat injections do not require any special recovery. You may have some discomfort and swelling in the area where the fat was removed for the injections.
