Men and women in Washington DC, Fredericksburg, Stafford, Richmond, Charlottesville, and the surrounding areas of Virginia who want to look younger often consider facelift surgery when less invasive procedures are no longer viable options. At Surgical Arts of Virginia, we offer facelifts to help patients correct wrinkles, folds, creases, and other advanced signs of aging.
What is a Facelift?
Rhytidectomy is a cosmetic procedure that is typically performed on older patients. It targets sagging along the jawline and middle portion of the face. The surgery is recommended because other options, such as dermal fillers and injectables, are not sufficient to reduce wrinkles and lines.

What Are the Benefits of a Facelift?
Changes to the face are among the most obvious signs of aging. Dr. Palmer may recommend a facelift to help with:
- Loose, sagging skin along the jawline
- Excess skin in the neck area
- Lost volume and sagging in the cheeks
- Deep folds of skin around the nose and mouth
Is a Facelift Right for Me?
Some issues that cannot be addressed with a facelift are:
- Age spots
- Uneven skin tone
- Creases along the upper lip
- Sun damage
- Fine lines
If you have these problems, Dr. Palmer may recommend other treatments in lieu of or in conjunction with your rhytidectomy.
How is a Facelift Performed?
Rhytidectomy works by tightening the underlying tissues of the face and removing any excess skin. Fat pockets may also be removed or reduced. Incision placement is determined by Dr. Palmer during the consultation.
- Traditional facelift incisions are made in the hairline at the temple and follow the hairline to, in front of, and behind the ears. A second incision may be made under the chin to smooth out the neck area.
- A limited incision may be used that begins just above the ear within the hairline and following a line in front of the ear.
How is Facial Rejuvenation Performed?
Facial rejuvenation refers to procedures that help with flaws on the surface of the skin. These procedures typically involve energy technologies, such as lasers or radiofrequency, as well as our medical spa treatments. Facial rejuvenation is an excellent complement to a facelift because the combination produces the most dramatic results possible.
What is Facelift Recovery Like?
Symptoms after a facelift may include bruising, swelling, discomfort, and numbness. The face is covered with a bandage. Dr. Palmer schedules regular follow-up appointments to monitor your progress.
What is a Mini Facelift?
Mini facelifts are popular options for men and women, but Dr. Palmer considers these to be unnecessary surgical procedures considering the availability of non-surgical treatments. If you are considering a mini facelift, speak with Dr. Palmer about your options.
